World -1

Posted on April 15, 2007

As a wee nipper, I was one of the very few kids around who could reach World -1 on the original NES version of Super Mario Brothers. World -1 was rather pointless because it was just an endless water level where you would swim around, run out of time, then die. Apparently, the Japanese version of Super Mario Brothers had worlds -1, -2, and -3. I feel kind of ripped off now.

Yeah, I loved how many secrets were in that game. Impressive even by today’s standards, I think. I had totally forgotten about world -1.

Even more amazing that we were able to figure any of these tricks out before the internet age.

I read about it in some weird book with no illustrations around 1989 or so. It’s pretty tough to do with only words to go on to guide you.

YO!!! I love those worlds. I thought you could bust through the ceiling near the end of world -3 and teleport (?) to more worlds. try it, check it out. I wish I could get my habds on an original NES. I miss those days.

There’s some rumor that you can get to some different negative worlds on the original US NES version. I have never seen this in operation though. It may be time to break out the old emulator.
