My Shoes Hurt

Posted on July 26, 2005

We’re now entering the 20th consecutive hour without power in the involution.com colo. It’s kind of weird for the power to be out that long, seeing how frognet, the ISP on which I am hosted, is physically located on Court Street in Athens, Ohio which is the main street for downtown for a city of 20,000 people. What really gets me is that this is the second time in two weeks that power has been out for more than enough time to deplete a massive 1500VA UPS (Thanks bumperman). I think Ohio must have suddenly morphed into some kind of weird low-rent are of Calcutta without the low rent. Aren’t we supposed to be the most technologically advanced nation in the world, or does that record only count if we exclude Ohio and Missouri? It’ll be a cold day in hell before I recognize Missouri!

DVD Audio Extractor

Posted on July 25, 2005

I ran across DVD Audio Extractor which helped me add a bunch of songs from my DVD concert collection into iTunes this weekend. Unfortunately, it is nagware, but hey, it got the job done more easily than anything else that I have tried.

iPod 33% Full!

Posted on July 25, 2005

I managed to make my iTunes to exceed the 4 kilosong barrier this weekend. I actually have a lot more music than that, but it’s not properly tagged, and it takes a long time to sort all of that out. The 4,159 songs in my iTunes library occupies about 20GB which means my iPod is over 33% full now.

Hasta La Vista

Posted on July 22, 2005

Microsoft have officially named their new OS “Vista”. I think they “stoled” the name from the Bad Plus’s breakout 2003 jazz CD, “These are the Vistas”. Already people are calling the OS, “Hasta La Vista”. I throw rocks at MS, but I have XP on my Thinkpad, and 2000 on a big mofo box at home that I use for recording music.

In other news, bartonbowers managed to just get a 17-inch Powerbook. So, I’m suffering another serious Mac-envy attack right now, especially since my Windows machine at home is on the fritz. That means I’m on the precipice of Windows 2000 installation v15.3, and that makes the Mac-envy pains hurt even more inside my head. Steve, make the pain go away, I don’t want to sign over my 401k for brushed aluminum computing nirvana!

I AM A PRIME NUMBER!

Posted on July 20, 2005

Last night, I was at Wally’s with mitya000 and bartonbowers. mitya000 picks up the order signs off the table, numbers 11 and 12, and proceeds to make them have a conversation as The Plutonians from ATHF. Here is that conversation:

Order #11: ‘Ja I am eleven, I am ze prine number!
Order #12: I AM TWELVE, Ja, I am De-VIS-a-BULL by tree!

I don’t know why I find this funny.

A Simpler Time…

Posted on July 18, 2005

I listened to some Metallica tracks today for the first time in about ten years. It’s interesting to hear music that I used to like when I was less discerning about the world. Hearing that music today made me realize that there were entire aspects of drumming that I had no awareness of back then. I wouldn’t have been able to appreciate Tony Williams’ expressiveness or Paul Motian’s subtle playing. I certainly wouldn’t have understood avante-garde players like Dave King or Susie Ibarra at that point in my life. After thinking about it some more, I felt the veneer of biterness wash over me. Why is it that no one has heard of these people who are doing things way more interesting than anyone in popular music? Did I let my friends choose my preferences for me when I was younger? Did mass-media and huge marketing budgets influence everyone to choose their favorites in the first place?

Mount Bonnell PTAssembler Panorama

Posted on July 16, 2005

I took a pretty good panoramic shot from the peak of Mount Bonnell. Visibility wasn’t optimal as I took the shot on one of those 101 degree afternoons last week. This is a five shot assembled panorama of seven megapixel shots from my Canon SD500. Enjoy.

Downtime v1337

Posted on July 16, 2005

Apparently Hurricane Galdavo hit Court Street and knocked power out for my colo for eleventy-three hours. Sorry to all the kids in Liechtenstein who couldn’t view my cacti pictures.

Explore2fs

Posted on July 05, 2005

Explore2fs is a very cool Win32 program that allows you to explore ext2 and ext3 partitions from within Windows. This basically allows you to read Linux partitions from within Windows through a GUI. My only question is, why isn’t this a shell extension like the gmailfs tool?
