Stupid DNS Tricks: Is “.” a valid hostname?

Posted on May 03, 2005

I wanted to try to see if “.” was a valid hostname. I added a

ServerAlias .

to my httpd.conf, and the appropriate

69.58.21.60	.

to my

/etc/hosts

. The verdict? Maybe it is a valid hostname. Apache, ping wget, and lynx all think that “.” is perfectly OK to use as a hostname. Internet Explorer, Firefox, ssh, host, and dig pour Haterade all over using a single dot hostname. I’m still waiting to see what decibel45 has to say about this. If he has consumed less than two homebrews today, he’ll be the tie-breaker.
