Dell’s Powerconnect 5224

Posted on October 29, 2002

Tom’s hardware has a review of the Dell Powerconnect 5224 which is a very nice, $2200 Gigabit Ethernet switch. Gigabit Ethernet adaptors can be bought for about $50 per nic now. It’s good to see some decent swiches come to market. Now, if only you could buy a 64-bit fiber optic PCI Ethernet card for a reasonable amount of money…

Here’s another shot of Hatti-san attacking it’s arch nemesis, the evil mashimaro. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hatti-san

This is a picture of Monza’s sister Ying Ying’s dog in Hong Kong. The dog doesn’t have a name yet, but I was hoping they would name it Hatti-san.

I finally put together a wireless 802.11b network. It surprisingly only cost about $180 for the gear to do it. I’m using a DLINK DI-714 Access Point and a Linksys WPC11 Version 3 PCMCIA card on a Redhat 8.0 laptop.

Dogs of the Linux Shell

LinuxJournal is running an excellent article about useful, but seldom-used Unix commands. I was skeptical when it started off explaining “head”, “tail”, “tac”, and “nl”, however, I actually learned a couple of commands like “fold” and “fmt” which I had never used previously.

Monza’s Beautiful Painting

Monza is infinitely proud of this picture that she completed on Saturday in her oil painting class. She’s thinking of moving to the south of France, and starting a new profession as an artist.

Wireless Security

Posted on October 21, 2002

Owen Stubbs cobbled together a guide for improving wireless security of wireless (802.11) Ethernet networks.

I’ve been contemplating installing a wireless access point for sometime, but have held-off due to the fact they’re expensive, and I didn’t really need it. Now that prices have come down considerably, I’m starting to consider it again. If I do decide to install one, I would at the very least implement Owen’s Level 1 and Level 2 security suggestions.
