Import Email From Pine to Outlook or Outlook Express

Posted on June 27, 2001

Here are the steps that I used to import my UNIX mail over to Outlook Express.

1. Copy the mail file from your home directory or from /var/spool/ on the UNIX machine
to your Windows machine.

2. Import the mail into Netscape Communicator for Windows

3. Import the Netscape mail store files over to Outlook

This isn’t so important for stuff in your INBOX as it is for stuff in Sent-Mail, and other
user-defined folders. I had wanted to do this for some time, but never found an appropriate
conversion utility.

Red Miller Departs littlefeat.net

It seems that Red Miller of littlefeat.net is
stepping down after serving six years as webmaster. I have extended an offer to lend my voluminous web development experience
to assist in running the site.

IDS and SSH DNAT Up and Running

Posted on June 23, 2001

I set up some advanced firewall rules on my Linux machine today to keep
the 31137 h4×0r5 at bay. After reading about configuring netflter for a while, I realized I could
use the Destination Network Address Translation to forward packets to another machine behind my firewall.
So, I can now ssh to a machine protected by my firewall externally! In addition to the netfilter stuff, I applied
a bunch of intrusion detection rules to my snort (intrusion detection system / packet logger) database.

Hackers Unsuccessfully Try to “Root” Meson

Posted on June 22, 2001

I’ve been getting a few (futile) attempts to “root” Meson (my Redhat 7.0-based firewall) at home. Some hacker was trying to expoit a
well >known Redhat 7.0 bug (LPRng) by trying
to overflow a buffer. Derek Hunt
from fusion-solutions gave me some advice on how to secure my firewall. I
setup some additional firewall rules using the NAT-firewall template at securityportal.com.

Last Night in Hong Kong

Posted on June 10, 2001

We had a great meal at Monza’s parent’s house the last night we were here. All of her sisters came over, along with Monza’s friend Andy. I’ll be in Rochester sometime on Sunday (delays notwithstanding). A big thanks goes out to Matt Mock for letting me use his Kodak digital camera. (I’m still saving up for an Olympus E-10). Installment #5 of my Hong Kong pictures will hopefully be up next week. Signing off from Tseung Kwan O, Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong.

Involution.com moves again…

Posted on June 08, 2001

Due to a situation beyond my control I was forced to move involution.com AGAIN while I was in Hong Kong!
So far, involution.com has been hosted in Ohio, California, Colorado, Minnesota, and now back to
California. The DNS is resolving Hong Kong as of tonight
